Reading Area Community College Reading Area Community College and its state-of-the-art Schmidt Training and Technology Center is creating custom training in computer hardware, and software for DirectLink Technologies, an information technology service provider that is experiencing rapid growth. RACC worked with First Energy Corp. to design a two-year associate’s degree in electric utility technology. “Our programs are specifically designed to come up with a solution to a problem in a short time,” says John DeVere, RACC’s dean of Workforce and Economic Development/Community Education. The Industrial Maintenance Training Center of Pennsylvania is responsible for the training goals of Reading Community College and the Lancaster WIB programs. Northwestern Michigan College When NMC purchased a mill and lathe from Haas Automation, it licensed VTE-CNC, which consists of software with tutorials and quizzes; and the virtual CNC panels and 3D machining centers that aide in teaching machine tool operation. Now, students can access class materials 24/7 on line at home or in NMC’s computer lab. They learn at their own pace—and can back up to repeat material as much as needed. |

Lehigh Career & Technical Institute When the Administration at Lehigh Career and Technical Institute started the planning on an Electro-Mechanical/Automated Systems Lab, they knew what type of equipment the program had to have—Industrial Grade. The learning environment and curriculum has to emulate what the students will find and prepare them to enter with workplace. “The courseware and software compliments the hands-on work which is designed to Industrial Standards”, said John Chowansky, the teacher at LCTI. |

Lower Merion School District Most of us tend to think of technology as computers, but Mark Piotrowski, Technology Education Instructor, and Steve Barbato, Supervisor of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for Science and Technology Education, recently told the Lower Merion School Board. Technology is much broader in scope. A starting definition of Technology Education is to say that it is human innovation in action, or the study of the human world. This encompasses designing, planning, engineering and manufacturing in fields such as medicine, agriculture, construction, transportation, power, information and communications. |

William Tennent High School Technology-education teacher Jeff Czekaj, who said that the change was two years in the making, was aware of only a few other similar high school programs in the area. “It needed to be done,” Czekaj said. “The program was a traditional program…. The school was looking to go into the 21st century.” |
