Create a MakerSpace at Your School

“Create a MakerSpace at Your School” in focus at the 2016 NJASL Conference

AES Sales Rep. Gary Lavieri discusses the benefits of an Epilog Laser Engraver with Librarian Carol Nawrocki from Essex Co. Career and Tech. Center in Newark, NJ.

The 2016 New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) Conference is being held at the freshly renovated Ocean Place Resort & Spa, located in Long Branch, NJ from November 17th to 18th, with a special Makers Morning scheduled for Saturday, November 19th. This is the first year that Allegheny Educational Systems (AES) has exhibited at the Conference; providing information and support for the growing MakerSpaces in Libraries movement.

MakerSpaces in libraries are gaining popularity as STEM based learning programs and the Maker movement continues to push the boundaries of education. A MakerSpace can teach students STEM related topics and give in-depth insight into problem solving, design and creative thinking. The projects done in a MakerSpace require multiple machines for specific purposes. Using a variety of approaches, the right tool can be used to solve a specific problem. This type of learning creates an atmosphere of inventive ideas, technology based learning, encouragement and fun. Libraries are in the perfect position to provide access to these tools and technologies.

One of the most popular and accessible tools for MakerSpaces are laser engravers/cutters. Laser engravers/cutters, such as our Epilog line, are the ideal tool for engraving and cutting a wide variety of materials. Epilog lasers can be used to create signs, templates, architectural and 3D models, as well as decorative and gift items and even markings on some fabrics. The versatility and quick learning curve makes Epilog lasers an ideal star player in most MakerSpaces.

Other items such as 3D Printers, Milling Machines, Vinyl Printers and Cutters, STEM Classroom Materials round out a MakerSpace and provide ample tools for students and Makers to explore and bridge technology, research, and creativity.
